 Keynote Speaker:  Teacher Tom

Tom "Teacher Tom" Hobson is a preschool teacher, writer, speaker, artist, and author. He is best known, however, for his namesake blog "Teacher Tom's Blog," where he has posted daily for nearly a decade, chronicling the life and times of his little preschool in the rain soaked Pacific Northwest corner of the US.

Speaking with Children so they Can Think

In a very real sense, the language we use creates reality. Tom speaks about the specific words we use, and how and when we use them, shape reality for our students for both good and bad.

But are we listening?
How many opportunities do we miss because we aren’t listening with all our senses
to what children are telling us? , Missing their thinking, missing their questions,
missing the challenges they offer us daily. If we become researchers with and alongside children, what tools will support us to create an intentional openness?

What do we believe about children?
What kind of adults do we need to be to achieve that which we believe about children?
What kind of educational settings do we need to achieve that which we believe about children?
Brenda will draw upon Te Whāriki, the Reggio approach and her lived experience as a Māori in Māori education to explore this question within the context of the conference theme.

Another Way with Play
If play is valued and ‘play based learning’ a given, where do we go from there?  How do we capitalize on the magnitude of ideas and questions our students bring to the classroom whilst still managing to cover the curriculum?  How can we keep them engaged yet ensure milestones are being met? How can we support and navigate a collective, collaborative and cross curricular learning experience?
